Related subjects
Most relevant
- Biology - Reiki healers need a good understanding of human anatomy and physiology to know where to place their hands and to understand the body systems they are working with. This knowledge also helps them discuss clients' physical concerns and monitor their wellbeing during sessions.
- Psychology - Reiki healers work closely with clients who may be experiencing stress, anxiety, or emotional difficulties. Understanding how the mind and body are connected, and how to support someone's mental wellbeing, is central to providing effective and sensitive care.
- Business - Reiki healers are very often self-employed, which means they need to manage their own finances, market their services, handle bookings, and build a client base. Understanding how to run a small business is essential for making a sustainable living in this field.
Also relevant
- Sociology - Reiki healers work with people from diverse backgrounds and need to understand how social and cultural factors can influence someone's approach to health and wellbeing. This awareness helps them provide respectful, inclusive care to all their clients.
- Physical Education - Reiki healers benefit from understanding how the body responds to relaxation, stress, and physical activity. The focus on health, wellbeing, and how lifestyle choices affect the body connects well to the holistic approach Reiki practitioners take with their clients.
- English Language - Reiki healers need strong communication skills to discuss treatment plans with clients, explain the therapy process clearly, and maintain detailed written records. Being able to listen carefully and respond with sensitivity is a key part of building trust with clients.

More Information
Before you begin a training course, you could get personal experience of Reiki treatments, so that you have an understanding of the practice and the methods used.
You can train with a Reiki master to become a practitioner by going through a series of 'attunements' or initiations.
These are procedures performed by the Reiki master to 'attune' or connect you to energy so you can receive it and pass it on to others.
It can take up to 3 years of training to become a full Reiki master and to teach. You'll be expected to practise Reiki regularly on yourself and others during this time.
Your training should include the Reiki core curriculum, which is needed to register with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC).
Career tips
You may find it helpful to have experience or qualifications in anatomy, physiology or other complementary therapies. Experience of working in a caring profession can also be useful.
Professional and industry bodies
You can join the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council, which has a voluntary register of Reiki healers.
You can also apply to join the General Regulatory Council for Complementary Therapies.
