Restrictions and Requirements

You'll need to:

Most relevant

  • Physical Education - Hospital porters spend their entire shift on their feet, moving patients on trolleys and wheelchairs, lifting equipment, and carrying supplies across large hospital sites. Physical fitness and an understanding of how to use the body safely during manual handling tasks are essential to avoid injury.

Also relevant

  • Biology - Hospital porters work in a clinical environment where they transport specimen samples, handle hazardous waste, and move patients who may have infections or injuries. A basic understanding of hygiene, infection control, and how the human body works helps them carry out these tasks safely and with care.
  • Psychology - Hospital porters interact with patients who may be anxious, confused, or in pain, and they sometimes transport deceased patients to the mortuary. Understanding how people respond to stress and illness helps porters communicate with sensitivity and remain calm in emotionally difficult situations.
  • English Language - Hospital porters need clear verbal communication skills to follow instructions from medical staff, reassure patients during transfers, and coordinate with colleagues across departments. Being able to read and understand written information – such as delivery labels, patient notes, and safety procedures – is also part of the daily routine.
  • Design and Technology - Hospital porters regularly handle trolleys, wheelchairs, hoists, and other mechanical equipment that they need to operate and manoeuvre safely. A practical understanding of how equipment works and how to move heavy objects efficiently helps them carry out their role without causing damage or injury.
