Related subjects
Most relevant
- Mathematics - Building technicians use maths constantly – estimating construction costs, calculating material quantities, and working out measurements from technical drawings and blueprints. They also need to understand budgets and negotiate costs with suppliers.
- Design and Technology - Building technicians work with technical drawings, construction plans, and CAD software to draft blueprints for building projects. Understanding materials, manufacturing processes, and how structures are designed and built is central to their daily work.
- Physics - Building technicians need to understand forces, loads, and structural principles when helping to plan construction methods and checking that builds are progressing correctly. Knowledge of energy, materials, and mechanics supports their work alongside engineers and architects.
- Engineering - Building technicians support engineers on construction projects and help plan the methods used at each stage of a build. Understanding engineering principles – from structural design to building services – is directly relevant to their role on site and in the office.
Also relevant
- Geography - Building technicians work on projects that are shaped by the local environment, including terrain, drainage, and land use. Understanding how landscapes, weather patterns, and environmental factors affect construction helps when preparing sites and planning builds.
- Business - Building technicians estimate costs, negotiate with suppliers, and help manage project budgets and timelines. Understanding how businesses operate, including procurement, project planning, and financial management, is a useful part of the role.
- Computer Science - Building technicians use CAD software to draft construction plans and blueprints, and increasingly work with digital tools like Building Information Modelling (BIM). Understanding how these software systems work helps them produce accurate designs and collaborate with architects and engineers.
- Environmental Science - Building technicians are increasingly involved in projects that must meet environmental regulations and sustainability standards. Understanding environmental impact, energy efficiency, and sustainable building practices helps them contribute to greener construction methods.
